When Everything at Work Changes and You Don't Know Who You Are Anymore

She got the promotion in March. By June she was eating lunch at her desk, wondering how something she worked so hard for could feel this hollow this fast.

That is the part nobody warns you about. Not the climb. What happens after? The way you can do everything right, hit the goal, get the title, keep delivering, and still wake up one Tuesday feeling like the floor shifted under you and you cannot tell anyone because you are supposed to be the one who made it.

Work moves fast, and it does not warn you. One day you are the one they call. The next something changes, a reorg, a new voice in the room, a comment that lands sideways in a meeting, and you are recalibrating quietly while still performing loudly. Still showing up. Still being steady. Just privately wondering if the version of you that exists inside that building is still actually you.

I do not have a resolution to hand her. I am in my own version of this right now. Same questions, different building.

What I keep coming back to is Ephesians 2:10. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Handiwork. Not job title. Not performance review. Not what they decided about her in a room she was not invited into. She was already made into something before she ever walked through that door. And whatever is shifting right now, the recognition, the feeling, the footing, none of that is what made her.

I am still sitting with that. Still choosing to come back to it when the week gets loud.

But I want to ask her something, and honestly I am asking myself too. How much of what you are feeling right now is about the job, and how much of it is about forgetting who you were before it?
