I Didn't See It Coming, But God Did
I had an appointment that day.
Nothing urgent. Nothing life or death.
Just something on my calendar I felt obligated to keep.
But something in me whispered, “Cancel it.”
“Reschedule.”
And just as quick, I brushed it off.
Because I had things to do.
Because I didn’t want to seem flaky.
Because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone.
Because I’ve been trained to push through—even when something feels off.
But right after the accident, I heard my mother’s voice so clearly in my spirit:
“Follow your first mind.”
She always told me that.
And now, standing on the side of the road, heart racing and hands trembling, I wished I had.
The traffic was heavy.
I was paying attention.
I stopped when the light turned red and the cars in front of me slowed down.
I did what I was supposed to do.
But the person behind me didn’t stop.
The sound. The jolt. The sudden slam from behind.
It was all so fast.
I didn’t see it coming.
But God did.
Here’s what’s wild, though—and maybe you can relate:
Every time I ignore that first mind, something happens.
Not always a crash.
But a situation.
A complication.
A moment that makes me stop and say,
“God… You tried to tell me.”
And every single time, I have to sit in that realization—that I heard Him and still didn’t move.
Not out of defiance.
But out of doubt.
Or habit.
Or wanting to be “nice” or “on time” or “responsible.”
But how many messes could we avoid if we just trusted that still small voice the first time?
This wasn’t just about a car accident.
This was a wake-up call.
A reminder to:
-
Slow down.
-
Stop rushing past His voice.
-
Stop treating the whisper like a suggestion instead of a warning or a word.
Sis, maybe your “car accident” hasn’t happened yet.
But you’ve been feeling that tug. That pause in your spirit. That “first mind” moment.
Maybe it’s your health.
Your job.
Your relationships.
Your calling.
Your rest.
And instead of listening… you’ve been pushing forward.
Hear me clearly: Listen the first time.
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” – Isaiah 30:21
